Ellen Maury Slayden
(February 16, 1838 - March 27, 1918)

1631 R Street NW, Historic Striver's Section neighborhood, DC.

Born into a wealthy Virginia family, Slayden was married the successful cotton merchant James Luther Slayden who later served in Congress for over twenty years. A fixture in San Antonio society, Slayden worked as the society editor for the San Antonio Express.

Slayden's memoir Washington Wife was published after her death and recounts life in the capitol from 1897 to 1919. The book offers a candid and at times hilarious view of the social hierarchies of political life in fin de siècle Washington.
